In October 2019, Project Amal ou Salam opened a new school center in Ajloun, Jordan to meet the needs of local Syrian children and their families.
At this center, we focus on early childhood education, preparing the youngest members of the Syrian community with the tools they’ll need to succeed in the Jordanian schools. The school currently serves 65 children, ages 5-8 years old, and is staffed by 3 full-time teachers, all from Syria.
Dear Friends of Amal ou Salam,
Thank you so much for supporting Project Amal ou Salam and helping us to empower the future of Syria! With your support we’re able to reach more Syrian children living in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey.
We also have some exciting news to share with you about new developments in our work with Syrian children in Jordan!
In October, with the help of our amazing supporters, we opened a new Amal ou Salam School, an early-childhood education center in Ajloun, Jordan, that serves 65 students from the surrounding area who would otherwise be out of school. Our kids are mostly 5-6 years old, but we also have a few 7-8-year-old students who are still trying to catch up on their education and enter the Jordanian schools at the age-appropriate grade level.
They’re broken up into 3 groups called the Amal (hope), Hb (love), and Salaam (peace) classes, and each is led by an inspiring and dedicated teacher. Our teachers are all young, Syrian women who have spent much of their free time over the last few months working with our Jordan Programs Director to develop lesson plans, find educational materials, and turn their classrooms into cozy, safe, and comfortable places to learn. Their commitment and skill are apparent from the moment you step into the classes, where the kids are smiling and open, listening and following directions, and excitedly answering questions — it’s clear they feel safe and cared for. Despite the hours they spend teaching their students daily, preparing for future lessons, and loving these kids, our teachers receive only very modest monthly stipends for all their work.
While the location in Ajloun is beautiful and we’re so thankful that we’ve found the space we have, there is still a lot of work to be done. As winter hits, we’re focused on weatherproofing and safely heating the classrooms, making urgent repairs and updates, and acquiring the necessary educational materials. In the spring, we’ll dedicate our efforts to clearing up the courtyard and roof spaces to make safe areas for the kids to play in the sunshine, develop summer program plans, and prepare the students (and their families) for advancement into Jordanian schools in the fall.
Your continuous support is helping us develop our new center and provide quality educational programs for Syrian children who would otherwise be left behind. Working through our network of volunteers keeps our overhead costs to a minimum and means that your donation goes further in providing direct support to the kids.
Project Amal ou Salam only exists because private donors have chosen — over and over again — to believe in our mission and our values and support our activities. Without you, we simply can’t do what we do, so THANK YOU for being with us all along the way!
Our team of volunteers and dedicated teaching staff are ready to do their part. With your support, we can continue to help the children of Syria: to inspire hope, to put smiles on their faces, and to give them the chance to just be kids again.
Keep Spreading the Love
